Blog Post #2-Initial Response

Well, we're a few days in to reading our personal reading books.  By now, we've read both in and out of class.  In your post tonight, share with the class your initial response to the book.  Who are the main characters?  Where does it take place? What does it seem to be about?  Be specific in your response and provide details.

  1. My initial response to my book is that it's very interesting how they are holding a parallel between Pat Tilman's early life and the origins of the problems in Afghanistan which ultimately made him join the military after being a professional linebacker for the Cardinals. I am interested in how this will progress as they go deeper into both of these fields later on in the book.

  2. My initial response to Looking for Alaska is that its an intriguing story about Miles Halter and his journeys when attending Culver Creek. Halter is a junior in high school who is an outsider and very interested in peoples last words. When coming to this new school he meets his roommate, the Colonel, and Alaska who seem to be very mischievous people. I am eager to keep reading and learn more about the all three of these characters and see what will happen next. I am also interested in learning more about all of their back stories and how their past is effecting them now.

  3. My initial response after reading One Day is that the two characters who are the main focus of this romance, start off as complete strangers, with completely different personalities and interests. Emma, the nerdy writer is not as big as a risk taker compared to wild, and curious Dexter. This interests me because they are such opposites, but they get along very well as a friends. I am eager to read, and see if there unlike interests, contribute to ruining their friendship, and how there romance is shaped.

  4. My initial response after my reading The Time Traveler's Wife is that it is a book about two lovers who are destined to be together. The main characters are Henry DeTamble and Clare Anne Abshire, and their problem is that Henry is a time traveler. It's not that he built a time machine but he involuntarily does it due to a genetic condition. Clare is very shy and Henry is very responsible. It is set through out time starting in the 70s and it goes onward, it mostly happens in Chicago and Michigan. I cant wait to read about how Henry's constant time travel will effect their relationship.

  5. My initial response to Moneyball is based off of what they have been talking about for just the first 3 chapters. It seems that most of what they have been talking about is the Oakland Athletics GM Billy Bean. The book started talking off by talking about Beans carrier as a player in high school going up to when he started playing for the New York Mets. It then goes into him becoming GM of the A's and how he would find players. In that chapter they went through all of the things that they would look for in players. I think as the book progresses there will be more talk of the A's and what he did and still does for the franchise.

  6. After reading the initial portion of my book, The Fault In Our Stars, I am stunned by the main character's laziness. I'm sure that if I were to fall terminally ill I would not be the happiest person on earth but I'm sure that I would make it my goal to live as much as I could every day instead of sitting at home watching america's next top model. I would hope that I would be able to be more like Augustus Waters. even though his cancer will not take his life he finds a way to make every legless day worth living. I love how August is able to make Hazle feel like she is special and admit to himself that things could be a lot worse the just losing a leg. Reading this book is helping me to find pleasures in the little things in life like going to sleep and knowing that there will be a tomorrow or screwing up but being able to keep on live and think that everything will turn out fine.

  7. My Initial response to The Fault in our Stars is that I can tell that this will be a very sad book. The first few chapters start out about giving the reader information on all the main characters illnesses. Hazel, the main character describes herself as being a shy, unpopular, cancer survivor who has now met a guy that she seems to like. Her mom and Dad are really involved in her life and want her to hang out with friends more (altho she dosent have any). Hazel does not go to school and is homeschooled which makes it difficult for her to make friends. she goes to a support group because her mom thinks that she is depressed and her mom thinks that this is a good way to help her feel better. The guy she met she met at support group and also has medical issues. So far, they are in the car together and she is going back to his house to watch a movie. Overall, I really like the book.

  8. My initial response to The Fault in our Stars is that from the start, I know I'm going to really like it but its going to be really sad. Everyone who said that "No one dislikes this book," was correct. I typically don't end up liking books that everyone does, but this one I have already had trouble putting down. The main character Hazel surprises me because in the beginning she is mainly sitting around and watching TV. I feel like if I were in her position I would at least want to get out of my house sometimes and live on with my life instead of sitting around just watching TV. Her mom thinks she may be depressed and wants her to meet and hang out with people, so she sends her to a cancer support group. The first times she goes she hates it, until Augustus Waters shows up. I can already tell that Augustus is going to become a huge part of Hazel's life. I can't wait to read more of the book. So far, I really like it, and I think that Hazel and Augustus are going to help each other get through everything together and hopefully Augustus's outlook on life will rub off on Hazel.

  9. My Initial response of Save Haven is that I like it. I just got up to chapter five and met and learned the background of the two main characters and think it is interesting how they both have trust issues. Katie came to Southport because she wanted a fresh start and is running from her past, it was hard for her even to accept having a new neighbor or talk to Alex in the store. Alex on the other hand is kind of careless with trust. He spreads himself thin making it hard to care for both his children. Alex has to watch one of his children by a TV monitor and the other behind the counter, Alex almost didn't see his son drowning because he was trying to work. Alex is not able to manage both his kids and keep their trust when it comes to keeping them safe. I know that eventually the main characters get together but I wonder how it will differ of be the same from the movie and if I will continue to like the book.

  10. After reading the first few chapters of my book, Francona, I have become very intrigued to read on. Initially, I knew that this would be a good, but, I thought it would be somewhat anti-climatic considering I know what happened in 2004. However, because of the way the author set up this book, I've managed to stay interested. I thought that it was interesting how the first chapter was about Terry's silent protest during the 2004 World Series parade, rather then a summary of his life. Terry is an extremely likable guy with a big personality; he seems like hes never afraid to say whats on his mind, even if it's to the people that write his paycheck. For that reason, I can't wait to read more.

  11. My Initial response of Spells is that I knew it would be just like the first book. I had enjoyed the first book of the serious so much, that I wanted to read the second one. I love the narration of the story and how their describe things. It gives me a good picture/movie in my head. The main character is a teenage girl named Laurel, who had found out recently in the first book that she is a fairy. Now in the book she had been sent to Avalon, a place where all fairies of the seasons live. There she must study the history of fairies and learn about her life new life now. There is also some type of love in this. Back in the human world, she has her boyfriend, David, but in Avalon she is slowly falling for Tamani, a fall fairy. "She is forced to make a choice that could break her heart." So it says in the book flap. I am determine to find out what that choice is.

  13. After reading the first few chapters in my book, The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks, I thought it was very well written so far. I liked how the author separated both the main characters and is telling us about them one at a time. It makes it easier to understand. Telling us some background of both Dawson and Amanda helps us understand why things are the way they are in the chapters to come. It helps us understand why they left each other so dramatically and how much of an awkward situation it is when they meet each other again for a funeral. It kind of shocks me knowing that when they stopped seeing and talking to each other when Amanda went to college they never once tried contacting one another ever again. They just forgot about each other and if I was in their situation leaving someone I love so dearly I wouldnt be able to stop talking to that person completely like they did. But now it makes me want to read more because the suspense is building as to whats going to happen next.

  14. In the story Will Grayson, Will Grayson, it gets slightly confusing since John Green and David Levithan alternate between the chapters. Each of the authors write about a different boy named Will Grayson.
What I have read through so far is that 2 boys with the same name from Chicago meet in a shop one night and the two boys figure out they have the same name. The two characters start to become friends and become real mutual friends with John Greens Will Grayson's best friend. His name is Tiny Cooper. He is a funny big gay man. He a funny man because if he is upset, like in the beginning when Tiny got dumped over Facebook, he went to a club and saw a concert and was crying. It of course was upsetting but it was just so funny!

I can't wait to finnish reading this book, but I don't want it to end!
