Many of you have expressed the desire to choose your own books and to increase the amount you read, so we will be choosing our personal reading books for the semester.
Today, you heard a book talk from Ms. Luhtala about a variety of books to choose from, and hopefully, you've decided on one. You should bring this book with you to class, as we will have built in reading time. You will have a book trailer project at the end, so be sure you're staying up to date with the reading.

I'll get us started. Since so much of what we discuss this year has to do with the nature of good and evil, I picked up Steven Pinker's The Better Nature of Our Angels. When the book came out, I read the review by Princeton philosophy professor, Peter Singer and was intrigued by Pinker's premise that we are becoming a less violent society over time. I am intrigued to see how he uses specific data to support these claims.
ReplyDeleteBecause Pinker is also a linguist, he looks at language and the human need for language in how that contributes to phenomenon. His studies look not only at the way in which language has changed over time, but also how our behavior has been affected by our language (or so I think that is part of what he does). I'm looking forward to learning more about his work and his view on these aspects of humanity.
I chose the book One Day by David Nicholls because of its great reviews as well as its recognition from the movie, starring Anne Hathaway. Also the book was highly ranked on the New York Times best sellers list, and after i heard a summary of the story, i became interested.
DeleteThe book intrigued me because of Nicholls unique way to tell a story, by only writing on one day, each year. I liked this because of its different style, and i can see how the characters transform over a long period of time.

ReplyDelete2 paragraphs mikeee
DeleteI chose the book Hole In My Life by Jack Ganto because I talked to the librarian and she asked what t.v. show I like and I told her Breaking Bad was my favorite show and she picked out this book for me. Breaking Bad is about a science teacher selling meth for extra money and it starts off as a small business and then ends up being very big.
ReplyDeleteThe book that I chose is about a person who gets involved with drugs and starts dealing and ends up getting caught and goes to prison for a few years. I haven't read the book so I don't know anything else.......
I chose Moneyball by Michael Lewis for a number of reasons. First off after seeing the movie I became interested in how it compared to the book. It received a number of great reviews and it was also on the New York Times bestseller list. This booked peaked my interest and I think I will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThe book is about how such a undervalued, underpaid, unrecognized team, the Oakland Athletics, could go on and win so many games. It also goes into detail about the relationships formed throughout the team.
I chose the book Safe Haven by Nicolas Sparks because I enjoyed the movie and want to compare them. I know Nicolas Sparks is a great author and is a New York Times Best Seller so I'm looking forward to reading his book. I think that the theme of good and evil that we have been talking about in class will be present in this book.
ReplyDeleteBecause I saw the movie I know the plot. The book is about a girl that starts over in a new town running away from her abusive husband who uses his resources to try to find her. She falls in love with a guy with two kids but they have a hard time trying to trust each other.
I chose the book Looking for Alaska by John Green, I picked this book because I am familiar with his work and thought that I may enjoy it. Other than the great reviews on this book online and from friends, it also is a New York Times Best Seller along with many other awards so I am excited to get starting with reading it.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the summary on the inside of this book I became instantly interested in reading. John Greens style of writing intrigues me and I am always up for trying one of his books. I am looking forward to get started and learn more about the characters and plot.
I chose the book Francona: The Red Sox Years by Terry Francona and Dan Shaughnessy. I picked this book because I am a die-hard Red Soxs fan and interested in learning more about the greatest baseball manager of all time, Terry Francona.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the back of the book, I became very eager to start. One quote that caught my eye was, "I think they're going to find there's more shit that goes on than they realize." I can't wait to find out what drove Tito said this. I can already tell that this is going to be a great book.
I choose the book Where Men Win Glory; Oddyessy of Pat Tilman because Pat Tilman has 2 interesting careers. One of them was an NFL linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals. The second was an Army Ranger.
ReplyDeleteThese are 2 examples of careers where you need to be the best of the best to get there. The army rangers are the spec ops division of the US army which is hard to get into on its own. And he played professional football which requires tons of skill as well.
I chose the book Spells by Aprilynne Pike. I picked this book because it is a book 2 of the series: Wings by Aprilynne Pike. I had read the first book and had very much liked it. I never got the chance to read the second so here I go.
ReplyDeleteThis book it full humor, fantasy, romance, and action. Its just the type of book that I like and enjoy reading. I really like the authors narration of the story. It gives me a good picture in my head of whats going on.
I chose the book The Fault In Our Stars, by John Green. I chose to read this book because many people have been talking about it and how amazing it is, and I got several recommendations to read it. Most books that everyone loves, I end up getting bored from. But I have been told that "no one doesn't like this book." So, I'm really excited to read it!
ReplyDeleteI read the inside cover of this book, and I can already tell I will love it. But I can also tell that it is a really sad book, which people told me. I heard that they are making a movie for it, so by reading it first I'll be able to see the movie after and compare them and understand what's going on at the same time.
I chose "where men win glory" because it was an interesting story of a football player who quit the NFL to support his country. I was interested in this book because it was about football, and I love to play and watch football. I would also like to see his struggles about being involved in the army, what tough actions did he do, how often did he go to battle, etc.
ReplyDeletePat Tilman, the MLB for the cardinals left for the army after hearing about attacks on the U.S. (It says this on the back of the book)
I chose the book The Fault In Our Stars, by John Green. I chose this book because I have heard alot about it recently about how whoever read it had nothing but positive comments and suggested I read it.
ReplyDeleteTypically I dont like to read books that are popular and I like to find them on my own but I am willing to give this one a chance and so far I like it
I selected the book, the Fault in Our Stars, by John Green because I had never read a book of this genre before and in my reading goals for this year I made a commitment to broaden my reading horizons. This book seemed to be a great transition from my usual adventure or general male themed literature to a girlier romantic novel.
ReplyDeleteI know that this book will be an easy transition for me because of the recommendations given by a few classmates who seemed very taken away by the book and told me that the characters of this novel were relatable and very comical even with their disadvantages in life.
I picked the book "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" by John Green and David Levinthal becuase I heard by several people about this book and I am a fan of the author John Green. I have read two other of his books "Paper Towns" and "The Fault in our Stars". I loved both so I figured why not read some more of his books!
